the Department of Psychology, in collaboration with the NSS Units of Government Degree College for Women, Anantnag, organized a one-day awareness program titled “Breaking the Silence Around Mental Health: A Community Engagement Initiative.” The event was held under the esteemed patronage of Prof (Dr) Masood Ahmad Malik, Principal of the college, whose unwavering support continues to inspire initiatives focused on community health and mental well-being. The Programme commenced with the welcome address by Prof Masood wherein he stressed the growing need to address mental health issues openly and with empathy. He particularly emphasized the importance of fostering mental well-being among the youth. Ms. Nazneen Shaikh, a social activist and singer, delivered the introductory remarks wherein she introduced the broader context of the programme, which is part of a nationwide campaign titled “Breaking Stigma One Mile at a Time.” In her address, Mr. Dev Desai shared valuable insights into the social dimensions of mental health, emphasizing on the grassroot activism, inclusive education, and collective efforts to dismantle stigma and promote psychological resilience within communities. The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Seher Hashmi, a survivor of clinical depression and borderline personality disorder. She shared her powerful and deeply emotional journey of recovery, which began in her teenage years after being diagnosed by her first psychiatrist. She traced the roots of her illness to early childhood trauma, having been relinquished to an orphanage at the age of nine months. Seher’s account highlighted the lasting impact of trauma on mental health and the urgent need for early intervention and support systems. Through videos, public talks, and workshops, Seher has reached schools, colleges, villages, and NGOs, helping people in distress and challenging societal stigma around mental illness. Her story, marked by courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment, resonated deeply with the audience and sparked a strong emotional connection. To further enhance the program’s emotional depth, Ms. Nazneen Shaikh performed a soulful musical composition that artistically depicted the emotional struggles and healing associated with mental illness, offering comfort and hope through her music. The event was documented by Mr. Samayu Shukla, a skilled visual storyteller and filmmaker, who captured its highlights with the aim of extending its impact through digital and social media platforms. A key highlight of the day was the interactive Q&A session, where students actively engaged with the panelists, asking meaningful questions and receiving practical advice and emotional support. The entire program was moderated by Ms. Fatima Jeelani, a student of Psychology, assuring smooth coordination and meaningful engagement throughout the day.
