Department of Botany

The Department of Botany was established in 1982 with an aim to provide quality education to female students and to contribute for the development of Plant Sciences. The Department places emphasis on laboratory component in the teaching curriculum and research projects. The Department regularly organizes Botanical tours to natural vegetation areas and Botanical Gardens of the State. Besides organizing intercollege and state level seminars etc.The department also organizes some special lectures by Research Scholars and Guest Lecturers from different universities. The Department has highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty some of which have more than 20 years of teaching experience. Our pedagogy focuses on basic and applied fields of Plant Sciences assisted with modern IT enabled teaching gadgets and has completely shifted from traditional teaching methods to digital teaching technology. The Departmental laboratories are well equipped with modern equipment’s such as computer aided microscopes, Double beam spectrophotometers, Polymerase chain Reaction (PCR) machines, Microprocessor based Centrifuge, Electrophoretic units, Magnetic stirrers, autoclave, and laminar air Flow etc. The department has a mesmerizing Museum with unique ethnobotanical collection, a Herbarium and a photogalary of some prominent medicinal plants of Kashmir Himalayas. For practical demonstration of the students the department is the custodian of biodiversity rich Botanical garden and a separate herbal garden. Our Botanical garden is a repository of different plant species. Similarly our herbal garden has some valuable and novel herbs/medicinal plants of Kashmir Himalayas like Ajuga, Rheum, Podophyllum, Dioschorea, lavendula and Piccorrhiza etc. Both these gardens provide Medicinal, and Aesthetic significance to our department.
